Google has offered us the opportunity to reach back into our community in aims of recruiting more minorities into STEM fields, specifically Computer Science and Computer Engineering. JCSU group leads were challenged to create a fun program that will amount to a sparked interest in Computer Science/Engineering and our group decided to look into teaching a programming language that is a general requirement in CS/CE majors that is interactive, fun and a skill that can be applied and exploited in CS/CE fields - that being HTML/CSS/JavaScript.
Below are extensive details about the program; Program Objectives: *Expose minority students to HTML/CSS/JavaScript *Encourage possible first generation students to pursue higher education *Allow our mentees a head start in the CS/CT career fields *Expose them to mentors at both the college and work field level *Increase confidence and interest in Computer Science and Information Technology fields. Program Content Session 1: Introduction to CS/IT and Mentors/Mentees Session 2: Introduction to HTML (What is HTML, HTML Tags & Web Browsers) Session 3: Page Structure, Headings, Paragraphs, Links, Images Session 4: Attributes, Formatting/Styles, Background colors, Session 5: Colors Session 6: CSS Session 7: Create Website Session 8: Continue working on website with Mentors/ Mentors evaluate website and student progress Session 9: Finalize website Session 10: Present website, program evaluation and program closing ceremony The program will be hosted from May 30th - June 16th from 3:30 PM - 5:30 PM (on Weekdays) on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University. Students will be provided with dinner, snacks and learning materials and we have arranged a shuttle to pick them up from their schools. This program is a collaboration between JCSU and Google under the supervision of the JCSU Dean of STEM. Parents are also provided with the option to pick up and drop students off. Students are allowed to sign up, up until June 2nd 2017. The program is targeted towards high school students, we aim to recruit 20 students, each two students will be assigned a JCSU mentor who will be responsible for ensuring that students meet the program and their personal goals.

Start Your Own Business Age Range: 8-12 and 13+ Be inspired in this free, interactive camp that offers entrepreneurial kids the knowledge, tools and support to make their business idea a reality. Learn key concepts from testing their product or idea to protecting it, and receive training on how to create their own business pitch. All graduates will leave with a basic business plan and polished pitch, and the opportunity to present their idea to local entrepreneurs. This four-day camp lasts two hours per day, and campers must attend the days consecutively. This camp is for kids both ages 8-12 and ages 13+ and requires a Microsoft account. What if my child cannot attend all the camp days? Camps run Monday-Thursday. It is very important that campers are present for the entire camp since each day builds upon the next. If you know in advance you are unable to attend all four days, please contact me to reschedule your camp date. 2. How much does the camp cost? There is no cost to attend the camp. YouthSpark programs are free! 3. I have two children, but only registered one. Can my other child attend? Perhaps, if there is still availability. Each participant must be registered individually. You will need to go back to the registration page, select to “Register without signing in.” This selection will allow you to sign up a maximum of 10 children with the same email address. If there is no availability online, please contact me by email. 4. My child has a friend who has not registered, can we bring them along? We cannot guarantee any child who is unregistered will have a seat in the class, however if there are last minute cancellations or no-shows we will gladly add the friend to the space. 5. Can I drop my child off and go explore the mall? No. We require a guardian remain in the store for the duration of camp each day. This applies to any child under 13 years of age. There are no exceptions to this rule. 6. What should I do while I wait in the store? There will be activities for you! We have created a several technology experiences that you may try out. We also encourage you to bring in your personal computer to receive a FREE PC tune up or personal training on Office while you wait. 7. Do we have to bring our own device? Headphones and devices will be provided. 8. How many camps can my child attend? Participants will not be allowed to repeat a camp they’ve already completed. However, they may attend another camp if you feel they can keep up with an older group. 9. What if my child has special needs? We are happy to make reasonable accommodations for your child. Please let your camp leader know on the first day if your child requires special attention or special seating. 10. Another child is disrupting my child; how will you respond? Our camp leaders are well prepared to facilitate a fun, creative learning experience. We will refer to the parent to correct any behavior that is disruptive to the group. The students had a three part experience prior to our site visit the student’s completed research on the company, created their 30 second pitch and reviewed Job Tips with the Academy Coordinator Sherri L. Moore. The second step of the experience the students visited the Uptown Charlotte Office for a day which included presentations from Managers, Recruitment Coordinators, Associates, Partners and an Office Tour meeting various employees. During the Partners presentation the students participated in a Case-Study scenario. Words of Wisdom were provided by Stu Goldstein, Partner “There is no magic wand – you have to make your own opportunities. The grades you make now-count now – do your work- get the best grades you can. If you don’t do it- you will have no options.” “It’s all about Options” The day also included breakfast and lunch with Associates and Partners with a small-group chat. Each student was able to talk to the Associates during lunch the topics varied. The third step the students will complete a Career Assessment and the date with be returned to JA our community partner. West Mecklenburg High - The CTE Academy of Hospitality & Tourism and Business & Entrepreneurship hosted its Fall 2016 Career Networking Event on Thursday, November 1, in the school Media Center. Representatives from more than 20 for-profit, government, and non-profit organizations were available to meet with students regarding careers, volunteer opportunities and future internship opportunities. Registered organizations represent a wide range of fields, and employers include 2HotRadio, Cheryl McCullough Writes, Unique Background Solutions, Mountain Island Library, CMS/HR, CityYear, Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, CASHRM, YouthEmpowerment Services, and Divine Essence Total Bodycare amongst other. Students from both Academies, were encouraged to attend. Matt Sadinsky says, he personally connected with fifteen students. He emphasized the importance of communications, math, computer skills and science classes as they are essential to success in many careers. He goes on to say students were energetic and took notes and turned their notes in for feedback from the Academy Coordinator, Sherri L. Moore. Matt says it was a good morning for partners and students. He will encourage other CASHRM members to come out and speak with students during our Wednesday presentation days for the Academy. Sherri Moore, Academy Coordinator says the support the stakeholders played is an important role for moving our Academy work forward. Darryl A. Williams presented at the National Academy Foundation Partnership event held on the campus of Central Piedmont Community College. His presentation was directed towards business leaders to gain support for 2 new Academy programs at West Mecklenburg High school.
Mr. Lamar James shared information on the various programs and locations of Art Institutes. He included his background which related to student athletes, "at-risk" students and how he was motivated to succeed in spite of various obstacles that he faced. He prepared sushi that was made of Spam and shared the historical information of how Spam is popular product in Hawaii.
Jason “Jett” Jones supports our WM Advisory Board and serves as the Marketing Sub-Committee Chair. He’s busy at our feeder school Whitewater Middle providing live concerts to students. Jason has created an initiative to push live concerts into public schools exposing the youth to entertainment in an effort to ignite their creative thoughts. Jason would like to see all the youth become entrepreneurs in their respective career paths and to seek their dreams.
